The summit and slopes of this extinct volcano were leveled and shaped by the Mauri's who lived here between about 1400 and 1700 AD.
There were Kumara Gardens at the foot of the hill and many houses and storehouses on the hill itself. The lower terraces had no stockades by the top was strongly fortified.
The mountain was abandoned after it was captured the Wgati Paqa who settled at Panmure. The tribe which occupied Maungarei was on of several related to the main Wai-O-Hua tribe of Auckland.
